Readers Drives – Essen Techno Classica
Lockdown has given us plenty of time to concentrate on our hobby although we find ourselves approaching this passion from a different angle than usual. Our cars are still under lock and key. I spend my evenings whiling away the hours doing two things. Firstly, trawling PistonHeads, Mobile.de, Bring A Trailer and AutoScout 24 virtual shopping for cars. Secondly, deciding and planning my next road trip.
Thinking of previous road trips sent me back to my photo library and I stumbled on the pictures of a trip to Techno Classica in Essen a few years ago. I had forgotten what an utterly amazing festival of motoring history this event is.
I have been lucky enough to attend most major motoring events over the last 30 years and without a doubt, Techno Classica for me is simply the best classic car exhibition I have attended. It’s the diversity that makes it so fascinating. You will see all sorts of cars that you simply never get to see here in the UK. The event also incorporates motorcycles, commercial vehicles as well as an awesome amount of memorabilia. Its spread over twelve halls with a surface area of 120,000 sq./m. I would wager any of you that you will not be able to leave this event without having made some kind of purchase to either drive, ride or carry home. The foods not bad either!
Essen is an easy and enjoyable 4 hour run from Calais. You will need two full days to take in the whole show. Book a hotel in the centre of Essen in plenty of time as they fill up fast. Leave the car at the hotel and jump on the bus or a cab to Messe Essen and enjoy. Its an awesome event. A must do for the car nut and a great place to meet.
