History

Introduced in 1968 and based on the 2000CS, the E9 went under the draughtsman’s pencil, evolving from an executive four-door to a sleek pillarless coupe. The front end would take visual elements from its sister car the E3 saloon. At the same time, the footprint was further lengthened to accommodate BMW’s new singing and dancing straight-six engine, the M30. Designed by Alex von Falkenhausen, ‘the big six’ as it would be known was a gamechanger for the struggling brand in the market and their impact on motorsport.

Creating A Lightweight

With the E9 CS and CSi models serving as testbeds, it was time to add power and add lightness. Enter the CSL,’ L’meaning ‘leicht’ or ‘light’ in the king’s English. Lightness was achieved using thinner gauge steel to build the body, and aluminium for the doors, bonnet and boot lid. Perspex was used for the side windows and thinner carpets finished the cabin, with no sound deadening added for driver comfort. This resulted in the CSL being 210kg lighter than the 3.0 CSi.

The City Pack

Almost, if not all of the 500 RHD versions came fitted with the ‘City Pack’, an optional extra designed to make the CSL more comfortable for the road. It included power steering, electric glass front and rear windows, a heated rear screen, boot lock, toolkit, sound deadening, interior bonnet release and chrome CSi front and rear bumpers. This understandably added a small amount of weight back to the final kerbweight of the CSL. City Pack Cars were also built on the standard 3.0 CSi suspension. Whereas the initial 169 CSL prototypes were built using Bilstein shocks and progressive rate springs. This gave the CSL with City Pack a much refined and compliant ride.

Homologation and Motorsport

1,265 CSL’s were made to homologate the CSL for motorsport. The M30 3.0 engine was given a small increase in capacity from 2958cc to 3003cc to allow the CSL to enter the ‘over three litre’ racing category. With 200bhp the CSL found great success in the Group 2 of the European Touring car championships with CSL drivers winning the Drivers Title six times in the years 1973 and 1975 to 1979. It would later finish first in its class at Le Mans at the hands of Dieter Quester, solidifying the lighter and faster CSL ‘Batmobile’ as an icon in motorsport history.

The current owner, with nearly 50 years’ experience repairing, servicing and restoring 2002’s, 3.0 CS and E3 saloons, purchased this 3.0 CSL 12 years ago with the intention of building a perfect Lightweight for himself. Four years later, 750 hours of labour and a parts list exceeding £40,000, his CSL rolled out of the workshop for its maiden trip to the Bavaria Festival in Munich. Since then, the car has been enjoyed on many European road trips and motoring festivals, having taken pride of place in his collection.

It is now time for his much loved CSL to find a new owner to fund his next two restoration projects. He tells us he needs to ‘crack on’ with the restoration of his final CSL and a one owner from new 2002 Tii before getting too old.

Prior to hand over to the new owner, this CSL will pass through the workshop under Barney’s supervision for a full service and detailed inspection, ensuring this Lightweight is ready to enjoy with total turnkey motoring and no nasty classic car surprises.

Our Thoughts

This represents an opportunity to own an immaculate and correctly restored City Pack Lightweight that has been known to me for the last 34 years. - Barney Halse
