Servicing and Maintenance
To the casual observer, Porsche has been making the same car for sixty years, with each new generation incrementally better than the last. Yet, slip behind the wheel of any 911 and there’s no mistaking it, you’re in a Porsche.
The 911 story began in 1963. The '901' as it first debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show was powered by a 2.0 litre air-cooled flat-six producing 130bhp, reaching 62mph in 9.1 seconds and butting up against the limit of physics at 130mph.
Since the days of the 901 however, things have gotten rather out of hand. We champion Porsche’s of the ‘80s, ‘90s and early 2000’s as pure drivers cars. To this day a 997 GT3 RS remains one of the most coveted track day weapons ever created, while many a tale of remorse has been shared in this office about a 993 that got away...
Neither of those examples have bells nor whistles to tout, yet remain the pinnacle of 911 specimens among enthusiasts. On the other hand, the latest computational number crunching 992.2 Hybrid Turbo S produces a staggering 701 geek derived horses and by means of clever 4 wheel-drive acronyms, is able to put that power to use with devastating effect. It’s phenomenal, but it wasn’t for us...
However, after a customer’s 991 Carrera T became the subject of a test drive, it became immediately clear that this was something special.
Lucky owners could choose between a short-ratio seven-speed manual gearbox complete with a shorter, more direct gear selector or Porsche’s slick seven-speed PDK. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through a mechanical limited-slip differential, and Porsche’s Active Suspension Management (PASM) system. It’s a very back to basics approach that, try as we might, find it hard to fault.
Porsche exercised admirable restraint with the power output of the 991 Carrera T. The 3.0 litre twin-turbo flat-six was already capable of producing 370bhp and 450Nm of torque, just like the standard Carrera, enough for a 0–62mph sprint in just 4.5 seconds. Instead, they considered the full package, ditching weight where possible.
Compared with the standard Carrera, the T sheds around 35kg of bulk from the overall weight, that’s an entire child! But don’t feel bad about leaving the young ones with the grandparents, as along with lightweight glass, reduced sound deadening and lightweight sports seats, you can opt to remove the rear seats altogether!
We sourced a one owner, low-mileage example finished in a clean Gloss White. Complemented by 20-inch Carrera S alloy wheels and matching mirrors, the minimalist exterior is enhanced by subtle grey side decals, a tasteful nod to the yuppie-era 911s of the 1980s.
If there was one area lacking in the standard T, it was the interior. The original half-leather and pinstripe cloth felt uninspired and altogether too serious. Fabric sourced from Porsche Exclusive, as found in certain GT3 models, injects a modern reinterpretation of a vintage 911 aesthetic, adding texture and occasion. For added fun, the red door pulls and matching red seatbelts inject a splash of playful colour into an otherwise monochrome cabin.
The 991 Carrera T is a machine truly greater than the sum of its parts. It’s neither the most powerful nor the most luxurious 911 in the lineup, yet it resonates deeply with those who crave a genuine connection to their car. Its short-ratio manual gearbox, smooth and predictable power delivery, and bat-like agility continue to slap a boyish grin across our faces. With the sound deadening removed, the snarl of that sports exhaust chases after you, never catching you, but daring you to try outrun it. There’s nothing unnecessary or ostentatious about its narrow body, it’s a pure driver’s Porsche, equally at home sailing along the silky French toll roads for a weekend escape as it is carving through the rugged B-roads of Sussex. And for that, we love it.
Our Thoughts
Perhaps the last truly analogue 911, the Carrera T is without question a future classic. Its focus on simplicity, lightness, and driving purity captures everything us enthusiasts look for, whilst remaining utterly usable every day.
