Peugeot 205 GTI

There are certain cars that define a generation. The Peugeot 205 GTI is one of them.
Arriving at a time when traditional British sports cars were fading into history, the hot hatch emerged as the performance car of choice for a new generation of enthusiasts. Cars such as the Ford Fiesta XR2 and Metro GTi offered accessible thrills, but it was the Peugeot 205 GTI that really nailed the brief.

Introduced in 1984, the original 1.6 GTI immediately established itself as the benchmark. However, it was the arrival of the larger-engined 1.9 GTI in late 1986 that cemented the model's legendary status. Producing around 130bhp, the 1.9 delivered performance figures that remained the blueprint for France’s hot-hatches for decades.

Weighing little more than 900kg, the 205 GTI remains a masterclass in driver involvement. There is no power steering to dilute feedback and no electronic interference to soften the experience. Instead, you're treated to sharp steering, a precise five-speed manual gearbox and an eagerness to change direction that few modern cars can replicate. Every journey feels like an event.

From 1987 onwards, Peugeot introduced galvanised steel body panels, significantly improving corrosion resistance and helping many surviving examples outlast contemporary rivals from Ford, Renault and Vauxhall.

The 1.9 GTI didn’t just serve up additional power. It also benefited from larger 15-inch Speedline alloy wheels, upgraded rear disc brakes and a more luxurious cabin featuring half-leather seats. Performance was suitably brisk, with 0-62mph apprehended in around 7.8 seconds and a top speed of approximately 127mph.

By late 1989, catalytic converters were introduced to meet tightening emissions regulations, reducing output slightly to around 122bhp. Earlier non-catalyst cars, such as this example, are therefore widely regarded as the most desirable and purest expression of the model.

Today, the appeal of the 205 GTI is as strong as ever. Its Pininfarina-penned styling remains timeless, the handling is wonderfully agile, and the distinctive exhaust rasp continue to delight. While production numbers for the 1.6 GTI significantly exceeded those of the 1.9, the larger-engined car has become the more sought-after variant, offering greater performance and exclusivity in equal measure.

This particular car is an exceptional example, not simply because of its condition, but because of its remarkable story.
Finished in Cherry Red, this 1988 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 has been part of the Hero Collection since 2014. Its story begins in Newport, South Wales, where it was purchased new in August 1988 from Hawkins of Cornwall by a devoted enthusiast. The original purchase invoice shows a sale price of £9,900, with a selection of period accessories specified from new including GTI carpets, a sunroof deflector, mudflaps, boot tidy and locking wheel nuts.

For the first eight years of its life, the car was maintained with remarkable diligence, returning to Dutton-Forshaw in Newport every six months for servicing regardless of mileage. During that period it accumulated just 8,000 miles before its owner made a decision that many enthusiasts will understand and even fewer would admit to. The 205 had become too precious to use.

In 1996, the car was retired from active service and placed into dry garage storage, preserved indefinitely. Such was the owner's devotion that he maintained a handwritten ledger, making weekly entries recording the date, fuel level and an odometer that remained frozen in time. Every expenditure was meticulously logged to the penny. It is one of the most extraordinary records of ownership we have ever encountered.

When the difficult decision was made to part with the car in 2014, it joined the Hero Collection as its new custodian. Looking through the accompanying history file, one suspects the handover was not entirely without emotion. The paperwork is so comprehensive and the ownership so meticulous that you almost expect to find claw marks on the folder from the day it changed hands.

The GTI then spent a further decade within the Hero Collection before, in 2025, we decided it deserved a very special birthday present.

Our brief was simple, preserve everything that made the car original while replacing every age-related component that could compromise reliability. This was never intended as a restoration, but rather a comprehensive recommissioning programme designed to make the car drive and perform exactly as Peugeot intended in 1988.

In a programme of work totalling £15,000, every perishable component was subject to heavy scrutiny. Rubber coolant hoses, fuel hoses, brake hoses, suspension bushes, gaiters, ball joints and service items were replaced where required. The cooling system was overhauled, including a new water pump and cambelt. Four new tyres were fitted and countless smaller items attended to throughout, including a thorough treatment of clear cavity wax to preserve this fantastic bodyshell. The work was carried out with one guiding principle, originality above all else, but with the confidence to use the car exactly as it was designed to be used.

The result is a remarkably original, low-mileage 205 GTI that retains all of its authenticity while benefiting from a level of preparation rarely seen. It is a car that could be enjoyed on a Sunday morning B-road blast, displayed at the finest concours event, or pointed towards the South of France for a grand touring holiday without hesitation.

Before handover to the new owner, the 205 GTI will pass through the workshop for a new MOT, PDI and final checks.

A comprehensive history folder including all invoices, previous tax discs with mileage recorded, business cards for salesmen & technicians that have worked on the car, warranty brochures & certificates, Peugeot club membership certificates and newsletters as well as all original service books, handbooks, wallet and full set of keys.

Our Thoughts

Finding a Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 is not difficult. Finding one with this provenance, this level of preservation and this depth of history is another matter entirely. It is quite simply, one of the finest vehicles we have ever had the pleasure of offering.
