The touring capability of these superb coupes still impresses today. An excellently appointed cabin, with the trademark 70’ & 80’s BMW ‘acres of glass’ for first rate vision, a lavish array of creature comforts such as full leather, sports seats, air conditioning, sunroof, on-board computer and of course, four ‘proper’ seats and a commodious boot all add to the practicality, whilst the much-revered M88 3.5 litre, 24-valve, 286bhp engine delivers the excitement that BMW had demonstrated with the M1.

History

Supplied new to L & C BMW in 1986 and registered by the dealership for the first five months of its life and driven less than 1,000 miles by the dealer chairman, Tim Hignett (who this week visited us and was reunited with this M635 CSI) as his company car.

Then purchased by the first owner outside of BMW in October 1986 and financed by his company as his company car. The car is still owned by his son to this day.

Handover

The M635 CSI will be handed over with the original manuals, service wallet, fully stamped service book, an utterly amazing document file containing every single invoice, every single MOT, Tax discs, expenses log, fuel costs, the original letters to L & C BMW confirming the purchase of the car, original sales brochure, original price list and a collection of contemporary road tests. Packed in the boot are all the original and untouched tools.

Today the car is shod with brand new 17” BBS split-rims and will be delivered with the original TRX wheels.

This sporting thoroughbred will sprint to sixty in six seconds and, in an awesome display of torque, pulls smoothly with increasing rapidity from 25mph to 158mph in fifth gear. Overtaking ability is equally impressive with 30-70mph taking a mere 5.5 seconds. A Getrag sport gearbox, limited slip differential, Bilstein gas-filled dampers, Motorsport springs, larger diameter roll bars, larger wheels and bigger ventilated discs with M1-spec 4-pot calipers are all testimony to a proud racing heritage, and the bespoke nature of this Garching product.
