The BMW M Coupe had a lot to live up too. Conceived by five clandestine engineers working under the cover of night, they conspired to build a no-holds-barred return to the enthusiast-focused philosophy upon which BMW built its reputation.

With monster tyres and oversized arches, the styling was far from discreet. The concept was all about fusing the relatively conventional sportscar design of the standard Z3 roadster, with Sumo wrestler levels of aggression and superior torsional strength that only a tin top provides. This was a return to proper old-school sports cars that demanded the driver’s full attention.
February 2001 saw the only major facelift to the Z3 M Coupe with a mere 165 right hand drive examples receiving the more refined and powerful 325 BHP S54 engine.
New electronics enabled the engineers at M to introduce Dynamic Stability Control, allowing the facelifted coupe to further manage and exploit the increase in power.
Grey instrument dials, additional colour options, a larger rear-view mirror, updated badges and chrome trim also helped separate this facelift model from its predecessor.
Now on its third owner, this incredibly low mileage and very rare Black Z3 M Coupe has covered a mere 27,500 miles from new.
The car is supported with a document file showing decades of MOT certificates, service invoices and a full-service history from BMW.
Having been a beloved member of the family for many years it is time this sleek Black Sapphire example finds a new home.
Dutifully serviced by the current owners son at a BMW main dealership, this M Coupe will also pass through our workshop and undergo a thorough list of pre-sale preparation work, including:
Inspection II service, fresh brake fluid and coolant. Replace missing o/s/f door card screw cover, fuel cap safety strap and o/s washer jet. Replace all tyres, rear shock absorber top-mounts and PAS pipe.
In addition to carrying out these repairs, the vehicle will be treated to full dry ice blasting to the underside of the vehicle, any areas of surface corrosion repaired and treated, seam-seal joints, prime and paint as required.
A final application of protective clear cavity wax to ensure the bodywork is protected before being carefully reassembled.
The car will be handed over to the new owner with all original tools, spare keys, service wallet, handbooks, manuals, fully stamped service book, document file and new 1 year MOT.
The S54 had earned a fearsome reputation among fans of the E46 M3, providing an impressive power to weight improvement in the lighter Z3 M Coupe.
Our Thoughts
In 1998 this was the car for those who found the M3 too soft, too understated, and the M roadster too fragile. Still beloved by many of M’s senior engineers today, there is no getting away from the fact this particular masterpiece from Munich is no docile house cat, it’s a Panther!
