The BMW M coupe always had a lot to live up too. Conceived by five engineers working overtime and undercover, it set out to be a no-holds-barred return to the enthusiast-focused philosophy upon which BMW once built its reputation

Back in 1998 this was the car for those who found the M3 too soft, too understated, and the M roadster too fragile. Still beloved by many of M’s senior engineers today, there is no getting away from the fact this particular masterpiece from Munich is a pedigree Rottweiler - not one cross-bred with a poodle.

History

With monster tyres and oversized arches, the styling was far from discreet. The concept was all about fusing the relatively conventional sportscar design of the standard Z3, with a heavy dose of outright aggression and the added torsional strength that only a tin top coupe provides.

This was a return to proper old-school sports cars that demanded the driver’s full attention.

February 2001 saw the only major facelift to the Z3 M Coupe with the installation of the E46 M3 motor, the S54. Only 165 right hand drive examples were built with the slightly more refined and powerful (325 BHP) S54 engine.

The later electronics enabled the engineers at M to install Dynamic Stability Control.  Grey dials, more colour options, larger rear-view mirror, updated badges and chrome trim also helped tweak this facelift model.

Ownership

The car is supported with a document file showing every invoice from new and a 100% full-service history from BMW. Having been part of a collection for many years, it is now time this immaculate example finds a new home.

The previous keeper installed a carbon M3 CSL style air box to capture that immense induction sound. The original parts are supplied and we leave it up to the new owner to decide which option they prefer.
