Inspired by the Porsche 550 and 718 RSK racecar, the introduction of the Porsche Boxster in 1996 caused a noticeable shake-up in Porsche’s model range. Designed from the ground up by American designer Grant Larson, the Boxster was to be a purpose built two-seater sports car that put driving pleasure above all else, remaining as Porsche’s best selling model until 2003.

The 2020 update of the now fourth generation Boxster 718 was an important one, with the smaller 4-cylinder turbocharged engines being left on the shelf, the GTS would see the return of a six-cylinder boxer synonymous with Porsche in the form of a mildly detuned and naturally aspirated 4.0 litre flat-six engine lifted from the Spyder and GT4.

Whilst a few lines of code by Stuttgart’s boffins means the revs are limited to 7800rpm, it produces 394bhp, only a few ponies behind the Spyders 414bhp @8000 rpm. Sharing the same exhaust as the GT4 and Spyder, you would be hard pressed to find the difference in performance, especially with the engine positioned so close to the back of your cranium.

Benefiting from a near perfect 45/55 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity from the aforementioned boxer engine and layout, the driver can truly reap the benefits of such a chassis. PASM adjustable suspension settings and seemingly limitless grip courtesy of Pirelli P Zero’s on the 20” RS Spyder Design alloy wheels make the GTS an enthusiast car that can be driven any time, any place and in any weather.

Whilst we’re on the subject. Why on Earth would you want a convertible? Ever the optimists, British people buy more convertibles as a percentage of the market than any other country in Europe. MG, Lotus, Triumph, even Morgan. Convertibles are as much a cornerstone of British heritage as maypole dancing (though arguably more socially acceptable).

With sensible sports seats that don’t require you to be a contortionist and an automatic folding roof -that can I might add be deployed whilst the car is moving should you be caught out by our temperamental British weather, we couldn't think of a better addition to our collection. The 718 GTS is a true purpose built sports car with 6,200 miles of headroom. Also, it's bloody GREEN, and we think there's something just a little bit fun about that.

Our Thoughts

Time was that you would buy the Boxster because you couldn’t afford a 911, but that’s no longer the case. We have the Cayman for that. Tongue in cheek remarks aside, the two seater, mid-engined sports car remains one of our favourite platforms when considering a modern performance car!
