Porsche has always been a bit left field. The 1969 Volkswagen love child - a mid-engined, rear wheel drive, 2 seater sports car, the Porsche 914 was very much genesis for the Boxster and Cayman that would follow in its footsteps. Fast forward to 2022 and the 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the ultimate mid-engined, rear-wheel drive two seater sports car.

A fast road track developed cruise missile that's as at home on the M6 as it is at Brands Hatch. In a climate of over burdened and wide-bodied coupes, the GT4 is Usain Bolt, attending a sports day fathers race, ready to obliterate a tired and overweight generation of peers.
This GT4 RS comes in a ‘Colour to Sample’ bespoke colour we are affectionately calling Oak Green Metallic, as a nod to the hue found on the Mk2 Golf GTI.
Featuring the optional £11,000 Weissach pack, it’s fitted with a carbon fibre engine cover and bonnet, adjustable swan neck rear wing, rear quarter intakes, side scoops and wing mirrors. A titanium sports exhaust and rear window sticker finish off the exterior changes. Inside, a small plaque adorns the dashboard and lightweight bucket seats embroidered with the Weissach logo.
The GT4 RS separates itself from the Cayman and 911 range by being the only offering that favours higher displacement naturally aspirated power. A 4.0 litre flat six heart beats in the chest of this rear wheel drive sports coupe. This GT4 RS represents so much more than just a track toy for the weekends. It’s a final last hurrah to the flat-six internal combustion Caymans we fell in love with, the future will of course be electric.
You would be forgiven for thinking the GT4 shares the same engine as the bigger GT3. It is in fact a 3.0 litre flat-six twin turbo from the 992, with the turbo’s left on the shelf and the engine bored out to produce an extra 1014cc of displacement, the result is an engine that loses none of the excitement of the GT3, and in GT4 RS spec produces an astonishing 493bhp at 8400rpm and 450Nm of torque at 6750rpm! In practice, the GT4 RS is an astonishing 23.6 seconds a lap faster than the standard GT4 at the Nordschleife circuit, which at 7 minutes 28 seconds was already no slouch and on par with the aforementioned 997 GT3 RS.
There’s no complicated rear axle steering or heavy four-wheel drive system, power is sent directly to the rear wheels, kept in check by an old school mechanical limited slip differential. The dual clutch 7-speed PDK transmission ensures no power is lost between changes. Former Top Gear presenter Rory Reid cites the GT4 RS PDK as “one of the best in the business.” – high praise for any auto.
Aerodynamics play a pivotal role in the design of the GT4 RS. Sculpted front splitters, aero formed front wheel arches, full underbody cladding and adjustable swan neck rear wing combine to create over 120 kg of downforce when going full chat!
Although iconic, the 911 is inherently flawed. Porsche has worked stubbornly for decades to overcome the difficulties of having an engine slung over the rear wheels, producing some of the most innovative chassis and suspension set-ups the motoring world has ever seen. So what happens when Porsche takes the already sublime fully adjustable suspension from the 991 GT3 and transplants them into a small, nimble rear wheel drive and crucially here, mid engined platform? The result is quite simply otherworldly.
The GT4 changes direction like a fly, no other car feels as stable and poised whilst managing to retain the comfort and compliance that driving in the UK demands. Body roll is non-existent, the high sided carbon fibre bucket seats securing the driver in place as the chassis simply revolves around this central focus point. The Alcantara steering wheel is free of buttons (distractions), positioned front and centre ready to respond to the whim and fancy of its charge.
Huge six pot front brake calipers come in a special order gloss black finish and are a snug fit under 20″ forged alloy wheels, with this example benefitting from the PCCB ceramic disc brakes front and rear – an optional extra that cost the original owner over £6000.
We are delighted to offer this Oak Green Porsche Cayman 718 GT4 RS. The car will be handed over to the new owner with all original service wallet, handbooks, service book, original brochures, spare keys, tracker documents, and history file.
This GT4 RS comes from a real connoisseur of Stuttgarts’ work, included in his collection is another GT4 RS, an ‘Outlaw’ 964 and a timeless 1972 Targa.
Our Thoughts
It's hard to quantify a machine like the GT4 RS, a car that is so much greater than the sum of its parts. It's not a car that you dominate and control, but a symbiotic partnership, a bond forged as driver and car learn their limitations together.
