Whilst the open top sports cars of the 70’s and 80’s had been all but eliminated by the arrival of the hot-hatch, a few stalwart marques proved that there was still a place in driving culture for a roadster. For the working man who had saved a bit of cash for a fun, performance orientated weekend toy, there was none so greater than the Mazda MX-5.

In 1979, American journalist Bob Hall planted a seed that would eventually reshape Mazda’s identity in Britain. During a conversation with Director Kenichi Yamamoto, Hall pitched the idea for a lightweight, back-to-basics roadster with the charm and purity of British sports cars of the ‘60s. The notion lingered. Years later, Yamamoto would find himself behind the wheel of a Triumph Spitfire, an experience that kept the embers alight for this future icon.
By 1981, Bob Hall had joined Mazda USA’s R&D department and the development of a lightweight roadster was greenlit. Mazda decided to put its Californian and Japanese design teams head-to-head, challenging both teams to present their vision for the project.

When the proposals were revealed in Hiroshima in 1984, the American design stood out immediately. A front-engined, rear-wheel-drive convertible, unmistakably influenced by the much loved Lotus Elan. The design underwent further refinement in Worthing, of all places, and by 1986, a sleek steel body, lightweight aluminium bonnet and folding canvas roof made up the final construction and was officially designated the ‘NA’ chassis.
Over the next three years, Mazda focused on perfecting the driving experience, ensuring the driving dynamics could deliver on the promise of design. The result was the first-generation MX-5, an abbreviation of Mazda Experiment Project #5. Unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989 It would stay in production until 1997, with a total of 13 special editions, including a BBR turbocharged MX-5 and turbocharged Le Mans edition in green and orange harlequin livery.

Engine

Originally lifted from the Mazda 323, the MX-5 housed a reworked 1.6 litre 4-cylinder dubbed the B6Z3. This pokey little 16v DOHC produced 114bhp and 136 N.m of torque at peak power. This might not sound a lot by today’s standards, but at around 995kg in poverty spec,  hatchbacks of the same era such as the Peugeot 205 GTi had truly met their match. A 0-60mph time of 8.7seconds and a top speed of 121mph means you can push the little scamp to its limits and still keep your licence.

The short throw, stubby gear shifter has remained a selling point since launch. Positioned directly where the hand naturally rests and rumoured to be a modified RX7 transmission, sharing many of the internals, the 5-speed manuals short ratios have been engineered to make driving engaging and exciting.

Jinba Ittai

Designed with the concept of ‘jinba ittai’ (horse and rider as one) the MX-5 uses independent double wishbone suspension on all four corners. Despite anti-rollbars both front and rear, the natural chassis flex from the open top monocoque platform encourages the driver to learn and engage with the car. The front engined, rear wheel drive layout creates a perfect low centre of gravity 50/50 weight distribution, nestling the driver snugly between engine and rear differential. An interesting aside that the UK market missed out on, was the inclusion of a limited-slip differential, offered on examples sold in Japan and the US, dubbed the Eunos Roadster and Mazda Miata, respectively.

Behind the period correct 14” alloy wheels hide vented disc brakes up front and standard disc brakes at the rear, providing more than enough stopping power for such a lightweight package. Power steering is a rare but welcome addition to an early MX-5, modernising the driving experience whilst not severing the bond between car and driver.

Spark Joy

Yamamoto-san was adamant the MX-5 should spark joy and happiness. Pop-up headlights, whilst earning the roadster serious cool points, bring levity to this fun weekend sledge. In contrast, mature design touches like chrome bullet door handles are an anomaly in automotive production. In an industry where every cost must be justified and weighed against the bottomline, touches like these are few and far between in the 21st century.

So prevalent is the cult following of the MX-5, that in 2018 Mazda began a factory restoration program at their facility in Hiroshima. The project was so well received that over 600 owners applied, with the first MX-5 to be completed belonging to Keiji Nishimoto-san, a tomato farmer who had owned the car from new.

Purchased new in 1992 for a total sum of £17,008.21 with factory hard top and floor mats, it was driven on dry days only and fastidiously garaged when not in use. In 2014, Mazda UK sourced the car for long-term display in celebration of 25 years of the MX-5, from which, the display plates are included with the car. A true testament to its condition, it would later go on to be displayed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed as one of the best examples in existence.

Having lived in our collection since 2017, this unwelded MX-5 recently underwent a full age related restoration starting with the underside, which was thoroughly steam cleaned of contaminants and treated with clear cavity wax to protect it for years to come.

Both front and rear subframes were dropped, disassembled and sent off for media blasting, paint and reassembly with all new bushes and front and rear dive bar links. The brake calipers were equally stripped, cleaned and exercised before reassembly with new seals and brake hoses.

In the engine bay, the cambelt, pulleys, alternator belt and auxiliary belts were all replaced. The cam cover gasket was replaced, a new battery fitted, sparks plugs changed and engine oil and filter changed. A total programme of work costing over £9,000.00 to ensure that our MX-5 remains the best example in the country!
Before handover to the new owner, the car will pass through the workshop for paint correction and polishing, PDI, final checks and MOT.
With the car is a thorough document file, car cover, spare key, original service wallet containing all manuals, handbooks and fully stamped service book.

Our Thoughts

An unwelded, totally original and unmodified MX-5 is a rare find in this climate, with far too many seeing the wrong side of a tyre wall or scrapped due to corrosion. This is an unmissable opportunity to own one of the greatest Japanese made British sports cars, with none of the British sports car problems.
